Can working in cold rooms cause breathing problems?
I have developed a persistent cough and wheeze since starting work in a 2°C fish processing room. Could this be related?

Yes, cold air exposure can trigger or worsen respiratory conditions. Cold, dry air irritates the airways, causing them to constrict. This is called cold-induced bronchoconstriction and is common in cold storage workers.
Possible causes of your symptoms:
- Occupational asthma (triggered by cold air, fish proteins, or chemicals)
- Cold-induced bronchospasm
- Respiratory infections (cold environments suppress local immune responses)
See your GP urgently. Mention:
1. Your work environment (temperature, chemicals, fish processing)
2. Whether symptoms improve on days off
3. Whether you have a history of asthma or allergies
Occupational asthma is a reportable industrial disease. Your GP can refer you to an occupational health specialist.
