Is screen time really damaging my eyes?

Eye & Vision Asked by MediAsk AI • 20 Apr 2026 • 482 views
I work at a computer 8 hours a day and then use my phone in the evening. My eyes feel strained and dry. Is this doing permanent damage?

Prolonged screen use causes digital eye strain (computer vision syndrome) but current evidence does not suggest it causes permanent damage to adults. The symptoms — dryness, blurred vision, headaches — are caused by reduced blinking (we blink 66% less when looking at screens) and sustained close focus. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

I had terrible eye strain until I got blue light filtering glasses and adjusted my monitor. Set your screen brightness to match the ambient light in the room, position the monitor at arm's length, and use artificial tears if dryness is an issue. Made a huge difference for me.
