Should I be worried about floaters in my vision?

Floaters are small dark shapes that float across your vision. They can look like dots, threads, or squiggly lines. They are usually harmless and are caused by small pieces of debris in the vitreous jelly of your eye. However, see an optician or go to A&E immediately if you suddenly get new floaters, floaters with flashes of light, a dark shadow or curtain over your vision, or a sudden increase in floaters. This could be a sign of retinal detachment.
