How do I tell my employer I am struggling with my mental health?
I need time off for my mental health but I am scared my manager will not take it seriously. What are my rights?

Under the Equality Act 2010, mental health conditions can be considered a disability if they have a substantial and long-term effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. Your employer has a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments. You are not obligated to disclose your specific condition, only that you have a health condition that requires adjustment.

I went through this last year. Here is what worked: I requested a private meeting with my manager (not over email), kept it factual ("I am dealing with a health condition that is affecting my work performance"), and came prepared with what I needed (flexible hours, reduced workload temporarily). My manager was surprisingly supportive. Most companies have occupational health services too — ask HR about this.
