What is the difference between feeling sad and clinical depression?

I have been feeling down for about 3 weeks. How do I know if this is just sadness or if I need professional help?

Depression is more than simply feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days. If you have been feeling persistently sad for more than 2 weeks, have lost interest in things you used to enjoy, feel hopeless, have low energy, difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite, or thoughts of self-harm, you should see your GP. Depression is a real illness with real symptoms — it is not a sign of weakness.

The two-week mark is important. Sadness in response to life events is normal and healthy. But when low mood persists beyond 2 weeks, starts affecting your daily functioning (missing work, not eating, withdrawing from friends), and you cannot identify a clear cause — that is when it may be clinical depression. Please do not hesitate to speak with your GP.
