My hands tingle and go numb after using power tools all day. Is this serious?

I use a pneumatic impact wrench and angle grinder for 6-8 hours a day in an engineering factory. My fingers tingle at night and I am losing grip strength.

This sounds like Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), a serious and permanent condition caused by regular use of vibrating tools. Under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, your employer must: - Assess vibration exposure levels - Provide low-vibration tools where possible - Limit daily exposure time - Provide health surveillance (annual checks) - Rotate tasks to reduce continuous exposure HAVS is irreversible once advanced. Early symptoms include tingling, numbness, and white finger attacks. See your GP urgently and tell them about your vibration exposure at work. This is a reportable industrial disease.

Do not ignore this. The tingling and numbness you describe are early-stage HAVS symptoms. If left untreated, you risk permanent nerve damage and loss of hand function. Your GP can refer you to occupational health for a formal HAVS assessment. In the meantime, keep your hands warm, avoid smoking (it worsens circulation), and report your symptoms to your employer in writing.
