I cough up dust after every shift in the woodworking factory. Can this cause long-term damage?
I work cutting MDF and plywood all day. There is sawdust everywhere and the extraction system is broken. I cough constantly.

Wood dust is a serious health hazard. Hardwood dust is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen (causes cancer in humans). Under COSHH regulations, your employer MUST:
- Provide effective dust extraction at source (LEV systems)
- Maintain extraction equipment in working order
- Provide RPE (respiratory protective equipment) as a secondary measure
- Monitor dust exposure levels
- Provide health surveillance for exposed workers
A broken extraction system is a serious legal breach. Report this to HSE immediately: 0300 003 1647. Long-term wood dust exposure can cause occupational asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and nasal cancer.
