My shoulder is agony from reaching above my head on the production line all day.

I work on an overhead conveyor line loading products onto hooks. I reach above shoulder height hundreds of times per shift. My right shoulder is now in constant pain.

Repeated overhead reaching is one of the highest-risk movements for shoulder injury. You may have developed shoulder impingement, rotator cuff tendinitis, or a rotator cuff tear. See your GP urgently — they can examine your shoulder and may refer you for an ultrasound or MRI. In the meantime: - Do NOT push through the pain as it will worsen - Apply ice for 15 minutes after each shift - Ask your employer to adjust the conveyor height or rotate you to a different task Your employer must conduct a workstation ergonomic assessment under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Repeated overhead reaching without mitigation is a failure of their duty of care.

The World Health Organization estimates that work-related musculoskeletal disorders account for 70 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) globally. Overhead work is a recognised high-risk ergonomic posture. WHO recommends job rotation, mechanical aids, adjustable work heights, and regular rest breaks to prevent upper limb disorders.
