There is no first aider on our shift. Is this legal?
I work nights and there are 40 of us in the factory but no trained first aider. Last week someone fainted and nobody knew what to do.

This is a legal requirement your employer is failing to meet. Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers MUST provide:
- Adequate first aid equipment and facilities
- An appropriate number of trained first aiders (based on workplace risk and number of employees)
- A first aider present at all times during working hours
For a higher-risk workplace like a factory with 40+ workers, there should be at least 1 trained first aider per shift. A first aid needs assessment must be carried out. Report this to HSE: 0300 003 1647.
