How do I support a partner going through depression?
My partner has been diagnosed with depression. I want to help but I do not know what to say or do. I feel helpless.

The most important thing is to just be there. You do not need to fix it. Say "I am here for you" instead of "cheer up." Listen without trying to solve. Help with practical things they are struggling with — cooking, cleaning, remembering appointments. Encourage them to keep up with their treatment. And crucially — look after yourself too. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

Supporting someone with depression can be challenging. The NHS recommends: learning about depression so you can understand what they are going through, being patient as recovery takes time, encouraging them to seek help and stick with treatment, and looking after your own wellbeing. Contact Samaritans (116 123) if you need someone to talk to yourself.
