I am struggling badly with anxiety and cannot face going to work. Can my GP sign me off?

Your GP can issue a fit note (formerly sick note) for mental health conditions just as they would for physical conditions. Mental health is treated equally under the law. If you are off work for more than 7 days, you will need a fit note from your GP. Your employer cannot discriminate against you for taking time off for mental health reasons under the Equality Act 2010.

Yes, absolutely. I was signed off for 4 weeks with anxiety and depression. Be honest with your GP about how you are feeling — they deal with this every day and will not judge you. During my time off, I started CBT through the NHS talking therapies self-referral. It was the best decision I made. Your health comes first.
