Why do I keep getting sore throats every few weeks?

Ear, Nose & Throat Asked by Dr Sarah Mitchell • 13 Jul 2026 • 445 views
I get a sore throat almost every month. Sometimes with white patches on my tonsils. My GP just gives me antibiotics each time.

Recurrent tonsillitis — more than 7 episodes in a year, or 5 per year for 2 years, or 3 per year for 3 years — is a guideline for referral to ENT to discuss tonsillectomy. If you are getting this frequently, repeated antibiotics alone are not the answer. Ask your GP for an ENT referral. In the meantime, gargling with warm salt water, staying hydrated, and taking paracetamol can help manage symptoms.
